The very very Short History
of
Frobozz.com
Way way
back in 1994, I met Richard P. White through some mutual friends and
acquaintances.
Richard, or RP, was working
at Portal Communications at the time.
He was already starting up
his own ISP, best.com. At the time, I was making my way through
Teacher
Credential Classes at
San Jose State. I was let go of a temp job (which lasted
almost a year) in the Purchasing Unit of
Santa Clara County Office Of
Education. RP offered me a job
at best.com, to help out
in the accounting department. Since best.com was in startup mode,
there were only two
people in the accounting department, me and Jerry Newman.
Anyway, all this internet
stuff was actually pretty new to me.
I had a shell access only
account back at UC Santa Cruz,
and loved it. (By the way, I was one of the first
people to be able to play Multi-Trek. ) But,
best.com was selling PPP accounts and I couldn’t
help but be caught up in point and click instead of mv, cp, rlogin, etc.
I was helping out in the
storefront one day, and people were coming in to
register domains.
I had no idea what they were talking about. I asked RP
and he explained all about internet domains. I asked if I could get one
and he said, just give me a name.
So, making the hamsters spin
in my head, I decided on frobozz.com.
This is taken, of course,
from the old Infocom
game Zork
II, that I
used to play in high school. (as I recall, my friends and I finished all
the Zork and Enchanter series…I didn’t like Planetfall because Floyd was annoying))
I’ve kept frobozz.com
registered since.
